West Muskerry A.C. and another fantastic day on Sunday last the 30th November in the
Munster B Cross Country Championships held in Watergrass Hill.
Sharon & Stephanie O` Sullivan competed in the Girls U 19 3000m and what a finish it was. Both girls started the race comfortably and built into the race. On the final lap they fought hard up the hill and there was a sprint for the finish. Sharon had a slight lead with her sister Stephanie following closely behind. Sharon was crowned Munster U 19 champion and her sister Stephanie taking the silver medal.
In the girls U 13 Katelyn Kelleher and Sarah O` Neill battled their way around the 1500m course. Both girls were glued together and they passed athletes throughout the race. On the final hill they had managed to get themselves into 2nd and third place. On the final home straight they were both closing on the leader and Sarah O` Neill had just enough to hold off her team mate to win the silver medal with Katelyn Kelleher taking the bronze a great achievement for both winning their first individual medals. They also helped Cork to win the Gold in the inter County competition. Sarah captained her team who all ran extremely well to the bronze medals and the team were Sarah O` Neill, Katelyn Kelleher, Grainne Twomey and Dearbhla Walsh.
In the Boys U 17 3000m Colm O` Mahony who was running up an age also had a surperb race. Colm never gave in and was well deserving of the bronze medal for all his hard work. In the boys U 15 2500m Chris Maher ran a fantastic race. The top 12 athletes were very close together and Chris had to work hard down home straight to secure his 11th place medal. Medals were awarded to the first 12. Chris also won the silver medal with the Cork team. His team mate John Downey also had a superb race and just missed out on the medals. In the Girls U 11 Aoife Lucey was in fighting form over the 1000m course. Aoife too sprinted to the finish line and was just piped on the line for the individual medal but won a gold medal with the Cork team. Aoife captained her team to the bronze medals in the team competition. Her team were Niamh McNabola who just missed out on a Cork medal, Danielle O` Neill, Aisling O` Leary, Brigin Kelleher, Beibhinn Moynihan and Roisin Walsh. The boys U 11 also ran extremely well. All the boys fought hard for their team. All 4 boys finished very strongly and it was the first big race for some of them. They were just out of the medals on this occasion but if they train hard together they will be a team to watch out for in the future. The team were MacDara O` Conaola, Dylan De Faoite, James McCarthy and Paul Downey.
The Boys U 9 750m was an extremely fast race with one big downhill start and an uphill and downhill again to the finish line. James Lucey just missed out on a medal for the Cork team but he ran a superb race as did all his team mates. His team are showing great promise as such a young age. The team were James Lucey, Michael Downey, Graham Lynch and Oscar Cussen Walsh.
Well done also to our two boys U 13 Conor Lucey and Conor O` Leary who had a fantastic race. Both boys finished very strong and are getting better with every race. Both were running up an age.
Well done also to our Senior athletes who took part in the Master 7000m. It was a very tough course but all three of them finished very strong. They were Michael McSweeney, Jeremy Kelleher and Jerry O` Mahony.
Best of luck to all our athletes competing in the All Ireland Uneven Age Cross Country Championships on Sunday next the 7th of December in Santry.
