Posted: 5/12/2016 - West Muskerry A.C. were competing in the Munster B Cross Country Championships in Clare Castle, Ennis, Co. Clare on Sunday last the 4th of December. Medals were awarded to the First 12 individuals, the first three clubs and the first three Counties.

In the Girls U 9 Rebecca O` Neill took off like a rocket over the first 200m. She settled into the lead group of 6 athletes and on the final 100m stretch all sprinted home with Rebecca awarded the 4th place medal. Rebecca also helped Cork secure the Gold medals. In the Boys U 9 Patrick Downey enjoyed every step he ran in his race and was delighted and smiling when he crossed the finish line.

In the Girls U 11 all 7 girls ran superb. It was again an extremely fast race but the girls battled hard and all contributed to their silver club team medals. Aisling O Sullivan stormed home and helped Cork secure the silver medals. The outstanding team mates were Aisling O` Sullivan, Lucia Duarte, Emer O` Sullivan, Kate Downey, Eve Murphy, Saorlaith Murphy, and Emily Cronin. This is a team to watch out for in the future. In the Boys u 11 Michael Downey who is coming back from injury again ran fantastically and finished very strong.

In the Girls U 13 All 5 girls again ran superb. This team have stuck together and are improving with every race they run. They are edging very close now to the team medals. They just missed out on Sunday but they will compete in the All Ireland Final in February. The fantastic 5 are Rachel Kelleher, Danielle O` Neill, Lisa Kingston, Aoife Twomey and Brigin Kelleher.

In the Boys U 13 Macdara O` Conaola had the best race of his season. He was calm going into the race and battled hard with the lead group. On the final 100m he misjudged the finish line and was just out of the individual medals. He did get rewarded for his efforts in that he secured the Silver Medal with the Cork team. He said he has learned from his mistake and is up for the All Ireland in February.

In the Girls U 15 Sarah O` Neill ran a great race. Although the nerves did get to her during the race she was able to control them in the latter half and made great progress to the finish. She was rewarded for her efforts by helping Cork to secure the gold medal.

In the Girls U 17 Ciara Hurley made her come back after taking a 2 year break for her studies. She too battled hard around the course. On the final 600m she developed a stitch but was determined to run through the pain and was well deserving of her individual 9th place medal. The icing on the cake came for Ciara when she also helped Cork secure the Gold medals. In the Boys U 17 John Downey ran his best race to date. He was in a huge sprint finish with two other athletes with John getting the better of them. Unfortunately he was short one athlete to make up the Cork team but again John is looking forward to bettering himself in the All Ireland.

Best of Luck to all those running the All Ireland A Uneven Age Cross Country in Dundalk on Sunday.
