West Muskerry A.C. were in action on Sunday last the 2nd of October in the County Even Age Cross Country Championships in Conna. It was a fantastic day for the club. A lot of our new athletes got a taste for the excitement of Cross Country running and every one of them finished and helped score valuable points for their team. Medals were awarded to the first 6 across the line and the first three club teams.
The Boys U 12 were outstanding. They had to run 2000m on a very testing course with a mixture of flat, hills and tight corners. Colm Gellispie timed his race perfectly. He never lost his focus throughout the race and in the final 400m he started to close in on the leaders. With 150m to go he made his move up the hill and into the finish and was crowned County U 12 Champion 2016. Colm was followed in closely by his teammate Breandan O` Sulllivan who also had a fantastic race and was well deserving of his individual 5th place medal. The icing on the cake came when the team results were called out and the Boys were crowned 2016 Boys U12 team Champions. The team who worked so hard were Colm Gellispie, Breandan O`Sullivan, James O` Neill, Jamie Hourihan, Rowan Mullane, James Lucey and Oscar Cussen Walsh.
In the Girls U 18 4000m race Stephanie Cotter has made a fantastic start to her Cross Country Season. She settled in on the 1st 1000m lap and then got into her stride and off she went. She led the race and opened up a sizeable gap on the rest of the field and crossed the finish line in 1st place. She was delighted with her run and she was crowned U 18 County Champion 2016.
In the Girls U 10 1000m race Katie O`Neill and her team mates ran a superb race. There were big numbers in all the races and the race was lightning fast. Katie battled her way out to the lead group and finished very strong up the home straight. She was delighted to be awarded the individual 5th place medal. Again Katies teammates battled throughout the race and all finished very strong and were rewarded with the Bronze Team medals. The team were Katie O` Neill, Aisling O` Sullivan, Rebecca O` Neill, Saorlaith Murphy, Emily Cronin, Kate Downey, Grace Kelleher, and Fern Mullane.
In the Girls U 14 3000m Shannon Cotter had a fantastic race. Again the race was lightning fast but Shannon stayed focused and kept the pressure on with the lead group. In the final stages up the hill Shannon had a battle on her hands and was just piped for 3rd place on the line and awarded the 4th place medal. Shannon is looking forward to her next race and intends to improve with every she runs. Her team mate Sarah O` Neill also ran very well having just come back after an ankle injury.
In the girl's U 16 4000m Jennifer Cotter showed her determination when in the first lap she let her competitors go and in the 2nd lap she worked hard to close the gap and it went to a fantastic battle up the home straight where she was delighted to be awarded the bronze medal. Her team mate Caitlin Hurley ran well but was out of the medals on this occasion.
In the boy's U 16 4000m Tadhg Manning, James Downey and Sean O` Sullivan ran fantastic races. All three battled their way around the difficulty course and never give in. In the final 600m there was still nothing between them and up the hill for the last time into the finish it was Tadhg Manning who was awarded with the individual 6th place medal followed very closely by his team mate James Downey in 7th and Sean O` Sullivan in 8th place. These are boys to watch out for in future races.
