Another great weekend for some of the West Muskerry athletes when they competed in the All Ireland Even Age Cross Country Championships in Santry on Sunday the 22nd of November last. Most of the athletes were running up an age and for some it was their first All Ireland. There were over 150 athletes competing in every race.
In the boys U 12 2000m James O`Neill and Colm Gellispie had fantastic runs. The underfoot conditions were very poor but the boys battled through it and were rewarded for their efforts by winning the Gold Medals as part of the Cork Team. In the Club team competition again all 6 boys ran superbly and were out of the medals on this occasion but finished in the top 10 un 12 teams in Ireland which is an outstanding achievement. The team were James O`Neill, Colm Gellispie, Breandan O`Sullivan, Macdara O`Conaola, Paul Downey and James McCarthy with sub member Dylan De Faoite.
In the Girls U 14 3000m Shannon Cotter and Katelyn Kelleher competed extremely well. Both girls were running up an age. Shannon Cotter battled her way up through the field and had a very strong finish. She was rewarded for her efforts when she won the gold medal as part of the Cork team in the County competition. Katelyn also had a great finish and gained valuable experience from the race.
In the boys U 14 3000m Connor O`Neill and Tadhg Manning also ran extremely well. Connor took a fall in the early stages of the race but got up again and worked really hard to fight back. He was rewarded with the gold medal after he help Cork secure gold in the County competition. Tadhg also ran well but the nerves did get to him but he still battled hard and will have gained valuable experience from the race.
In the Girls u 16 4000m Jennifer Cotter and Caitlin Hurley again ran superbly. Unfortunately Jennifer took a fall in the first lap but got up and fought hard to settle herself and move up through the field again. She was rewarded for her efforts winning the Bronze medal as part of the Cork team. Caitlin also had a fantastic race and she too was rewarded for her efforts as she also won the bronze medal with the Cork team.
In the boys U 16 4000m James Downey gained very valuable experience from his race. He was up an age and finished very strong and is now looking forward to putting this experience into his own All Ireland on the 6th of December.
