West Cork Cross Country 2015


Posted: 21/9/2015 - The West Muskerry athletes were off to a flying start in the opening Cross Country race of the season. A lot of our athletes were running for the first time and some were running up an age. All ran extremely well and were delighted to have the chance to run in a competition and cross the finish line with a smile on their faces. A fantastic bunch of athletes.

In the Girls U 9 Katie O'Neill has a stomer of a race and she battled her way down the finish straight and was well deserving of the 3rd place medal. Katie also captained her team to the bronze medals. Her team mates all who ran superbly were Katie O'Neill, Grace Kelleher, Lilly O'Shea, Kate Downey and Niamh Underhill.

The boys U 9 also ran superbly and were just out of the medals in the team competition and finished in 4th place. The team were Sean Lucey, Michael O'Mahony, Ferghal Gellispie, Eoin Hurley and Ordhan Creed.

In the Girls U 10 Ruth Creed and Eimear O'Sullivan had fantastic races. It was the first big race for both girls and they battled all the way around the course. They will improve more with every race.

In the boys U 10 Michael Downey, James Lucey, Eoin Moynihan all ran fantastic races. It was a very fast race and all three boys gave it their all. They were just out of the individual places but they will hopefully have their team mates back at the next competition and they will fight hard in the team competition as well as the individual positions.

In the Girls U 12 Rachel Kelleher who was running up an age is showing some great potential. The distance suited her on the day and she fought hard all the way to the finish and was well deserving of the bronze medal. She captained her team to the Silver medals in the team competition. Her team mates who all ran fantastic were Rachel Kelleher, Danielle O'Neill, Brigin Kelleher, Ciara Bradley, Moira Leahy & Support team Aoife Lucey & Sinead Hurley. In the boys U 12 Colm Gellispie was in flying form and he stormed home in the bronze medal. Again in the team competition was very tight and the West Muskerry boys just missing out on the gold but were delighted to win the silver medals. The team were Colm Gellispie, James O'Neill, Brendan O'Sullivan, Macdara O'Conaola, James McCarthy, Rowan Mullane, Aaron O'Mahony, Kevin Underhill and Paul Downey.

In the girls U 14 Shannon Cotter also had a fantastic race. She battled hard with the leaders throughout the race and sprinted home and was well deserving of the bronze medal. She captained her team who also ran superbly to the silver medals. Her team mates were Katelyn Kelleher, Sarah O'Neill and Grainne Twomey. All four girls were running up an age. In the boys U 14 Connor O'Neill ran extremely well. After mixing up the number of laps he had he recovered well and fought all the way home and was well deserving of the silver medal. His teammate Tadgh Manning also ran extremely well and but in a fierce battle down the home straight but was just piped on the line for the 3rd place medal. Connor captained his team to the silver medals and his team who ran superbly were Tadgh Manning, Conor Lucey and Liam Coleman.

In the girls U 16 West Muskerry Girls again were in flying form. Jennifer Cotter stormed home in 1st place and she was followed him by her team mate Caitlin Hurley. Jennifer captained her team to the gold medals. It was a great performance by all four girls to clinch the gold medals. The team were Jennifer Cotter, Catilin Hurley, Sarah Kelleher and Niamh McSweeney. In the boys U 16 James Downey and Sean O'Sullivan both up an age ran superb races. Both boys battled their way around the course and were getting stronger as the race went on. Both finished just outside the medals on this occasion but ran fantastically.

In the Boys U 20 Seamus Gallagher another up and coming athlete showed his strength in the course. Again Seamus running up an age powered his way around the course and was well deserving of the gold medal for his efforts. His team Mate Colm O'Mahony also ran a superb race as he was also up a few ages and he was well deserving of the silver medal. In the Senior Ladies Clodagh Galvin was very strong over the course and battled her way around the course. She used the hills to her advantage and it paid off and she came home in 2nd place. In the Master Men Jerry O'Mahony also running very well put in an almighty battle in the finishing stages of the race and he held off his opposition to claim the silver medal in the Master competition.

In the Senior men competition all our new Seniors ran extremely well and were in a big battle with Bandon in the team competition. On this occasion West Muskerry lads just missed out by 3 points and were awarded the silver team medals. The team were John Cronin, Diutay Matthieu, Henry Browne, Jerry O'Mahony and Jerry O'Riordan.
