On Sunday last the 28th of November 6 West Muskerry Athletes competed in the All Ireland Even Age Cross Country Championships in Grensha Co. Derry. Medals were awarded to the first 10 athletes across the line and the first 3 Counties and first 3 Provinces.
Stephanie Cotter was on top of the world when she crossed the line in first place. There was 5 inches of snow on the ground and it was snowing heavily while the girls U 12 2000m was going on. Stephanie did not have it easy as she had a poor start and at the half way mark she had just caught up with the leading group. She then stayed with the group until she had 400m to go and she caught up with the leader and passed her and was crowned 2010 All Ireland U 12 Cross Country Champion. Stephanie also captained the Cork and Munster teams to the gold medals.
Caoimhe Harrington also had an outstanding race in the girls U 12 2000m. Caoimhe was with the lead group throughout the race and was in the fight for the medals coming into the home straight. She was awarded the 4th place medal and also won gold with Cork and Munster. This was a great achievement for Caoimhe and she was well deserving of the medals after all the hard work she put in at training.
The West Muskerry boys U 14 team also ran well. They had 3000m to run in minus 5 degree temperature and 5 inches of snow. The team finished in 10th place over all. Garry O`Sullivan also won the silver medal on the Cork team. They boys were Garry O`Sullivan, Billy Cronin, Cathal Crowley and Seamus Gallagher. This team has come a long way since the start of the year and hopefully if they will stick together we will see some great results from them in the future.
